Catcha wake-up

I came back from running a road race this morning and, as per usual, logged into Twitter to post my running stats for all to see.

While I was scrolling through the recent updates my eye caught the following question posted by @mcleodd: “Why are there South Africans who celebrate Julius Malema? The man defines the antithesis of what we should be striving for as a nation”, to which I then replied with a typical Tweet: “It is very indicative of the state of the average South African then…? Don’t expect anything from them – they only disappoint…”.

I was thinking about this while standing in a blissfully-hot shower, then washing doggy-pooh off my deck and then washing the dishes when it came to me why I actually shot off that comment;

There are South Africans who celebrate Malema because he precisely defines what South Africans are striving for as a nation.

Think about it; position, power, leverage, influence, posessions, gratification.

This is what is propagated by the electorate of the ruling party and its government as measures of success. This is what is pushed by the national broadcaster as the aspiration of the nation. This is what is known to be the fruits of corruption and crime. If you have these attributes and use any means to attain them, you are not subject to any consequences of your actions.

No wonder their flock is confused…

So puh-lease catcha wake-up and when you do, you will see that Julius Malema, in all his glory, is the true mirror image of South Africa.

Julius Malema is a miror image of you.
